The incubators can alter heart rate of babies

The incubator is the most used today for the care of premature babies. They provide constant heat insulation and equipped with a monitor that controls at all times vital signs and the baby’s heartbeat.

No doubt their effectiveness, but increasingly questioned if the insulation is beneficial to baby’s development, since the evidence shows that babies who remain in the warmth of their mothers and breastfed improve more quickly.

Besides that, researchers at the Department of Pediatrics and Obstetrics at the University of Siena (Italy) have found that the incubators could cause some stress in infants because they found that the frequency of the heartbeat of the newborns decreased when the machine was on.

While the first hypothesis that should be studied in depth, the study’s authors believe the cause could be due to the baby’s exposure to electromagnetic fields from the incubator that alter their heart rate.

Investigators have said they will continue to study this theory in order to confirm whether these alterations could somehow affect the recovery of babies if I could have some effect on long-term health.

Of course, existing incubators can be improved, but look at the incubators of the future that have come up with a group of students from the University of Salamanca.

Is also improving the care of premature babies in general, we seem to forget that it is immature babies who need to be in contact with his mother. It has been shown that kangaroo care in which the mother holds the baby against his chest has a thermoregulatory effect, in addition to the vertical position of the baby makes its oxygenation and helps maintain constant vital signs such as breathing and the beating of his heart.

In my humble opinion I think the ideal combination for the care of premature babies is what links the technological advances with the humanization of care.
