Operation of the human heart
• The heart has four chambers: left and right atria and left and right ventricles. The sides, both left and right are completely separated from each other. The atria are the upper chambers of the thin wall that receive blood from the veins. The ventricles are the lower chambers.
• However, the deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right atrium through the vena cava, and then passes into the right ventricle, which pumps it through the pulmonary artery to the lungs.

• When the atria are filled with blood, the ventricles relax, allowing blood to enter and pass them through the valves that separate the upper and lower chambers. The atria contract and force the penetration of the remaining blood in the ventricles. This action is called diastole. A fraction of seconds after the ventricles contract, pushing blood to pass through the semi-lunar valves and enters the arteries.
• The backflow of blood is prevented by the opening and closing the valves, producing a distinctive sound.
