The growth charts and weight control have become an important reference in pediatric visits, however are a mixed blessing as they are not a diagnostic but a screening measure (a track about something could be going wrong) and often are not interpreted correctly.

This leads to low weights or heights diagnose babies who do not really suffer resulting in unnecessary supplements, change of breast milk and artificial milk introduction of complementary feeding early.

Carlos Gonzalez This video explains the correct interpretation of the tables. I consider it essential for both mothers and fathers who want to understand the height and weight screening is done to their children and for professionals who carry out.

I made ??a basic summary of the issue for those who prefer to read: The characteristics of breastfed babies do not conform to the graphics used to date who were made ??based on formula-fed infants. That is why the WHO has published tables that determine the expected growth standards for children around the world.

Nursing children follow a somewhat different pattern. At first increase a little more weight than those fed with formula, but then after 6 months, children are fed formula that tend to take more weight. Numerous studies discuss this topic associating feeding with artificial milk with a higher chance of having obese children.

Describing tables
The term best-known is the percentile tables. We hear it often: “John is in the 25th percentile,” and we say much, but often do not know what it means.

Percentile means percentage. Something like “for cientil” (percent). The tables marked from the 3rd percentile to the 97th percentile.

To make these tables are taken a large number of healthy children who are weighed and measured to then what is the usual size and weight and what is the expected growth.

The height
To explain the value of the height example, I caught 100 healthy children line up and ordered from shortest to tallest.

If you say, “Your child is in a 25th percentile of height” are telling you is ranked 25. This means that 75 children will go, that will be taller than him and 24 children behind, smaller kids than him.

If instead you say, “Your child is in a 97 percentile in height,” you are saying that there are 3 children taller than him, but 96 that are shorter, with the 100 children considered healthy.

Factors affecting the height of children are:
Genetics: If parents are short, most likely (and almost mandatory) is that the child is short.

Power: In our environment is not related. Only affect the height if the child was actually malnourished (developing countries).

The typical advice to increase dietary intake to increase the size makes no sense. The result will be a child to gain weight just short (if they accept that extra food).

Hormones: There are several hormones that regulate growth of children. If there are any problems with any of them can lead to a decrease or increase in expected growth.

Chronic diseases: Some diseases alter the normal growth rate. Being treated the child grows back normally.

There is a real problem against treatment addicts that they have to keep in ideas before continuous to take treatment like incredibly heavy drugs and alcohol. Even if it is hardly ever offered to the community we need to be conscious of the regrettable long long-lasting outcomes of incredibly meth. These outcomes perform against both the brain and the whole program and the material addict will end up in a real insufficient condition, near to his termination. This is why we need to prevent the decades to come of its outcomes and if possible to stop the consumption of treatment.

In the situation of a long long-lasting incredibly drug addiction, the whole program begins to look really old, even older than the real age. Also due to the insufficient activity the mouth treatments out and the level of acidity that is normally neutralized by the throw begins to eat up the enameled on the white teeth. Another impact is a serious decrease of bodyweight as the meth creates the whole program experience not hungry, factor that may cause to passing away.

The last stages of psychological damage contain withdrawal leading to convulsions, ideas damage and even devastation or passing away. This is why there is a need to stop right away the problem of incredibly meth as it seems to take its price among people of all age categories. It is probably one of the issues that need an established to be resolved and therefore people have to take activity to help the ones in need.

Beside the whole program, Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers require to have seen that also the psychological element is significantly affected. There are many the signs of the psychological outcomes. Most of them are irredeemable and the individual will have to keep with them the whole lifestyle. It begins with pressure and uncertainty and may end up in crazy conduct. Also there are interval of hallucinations and worry.

The program for weight loss surgery at South Miami Hospital will attract all the attention on Thursday, May 20 at 4 pm with the live webcast will allow viewers to see the bariatric surgeon Dr. Anthony Gonzalez perform surgery Gastric bypass using the da Vinci robot. The webcast, live broadcast will be moderated by Dr. Jorge Rabaza bariatric surgeon. Viewers can also choose to see the procedure in Spanish. Gastric bypass reduces the size of the stomach and digestive system drift.

It is the most common surgical procedure for weight loss because it limits the amount of food a person can eat and the amount of nutrients the body absorbs. “The breadth of perspective of da Vinci robot gives a clear picture of the anatomy adjacent to the stomach and makes it much more accurate surgery, “said Dr. Gonzalez.

With the da Vinci, are only five small incisions in the abdomen of the patient. Surgeons sit away from the operating table at a console, from where they control with their hands and feet of the robot arms that are inserted into the patient through these incisions.

One arm operates a laparoscopic camera, which helps the surgeon to view a three-dimensional image within the patient. The other arms act as one’s own hands and wrists of the surgeon to remove tissue. “The robot is the tool we use to help perform surgery,” said Dr. Rabaza. “Many people think that the robot is performing surgery on their own, which is simply not true.” Drs. Gonzalez and Rabaza perform this procedure as part of the initiative of Baptist Health South Florida to broadcast various surgeries and procedures in the network. South Miami Hospital is part of Baptist Health South Florida, the largest health care organization in the region, based on faith and nonprofit. It also includes Baptist Hospital of Miami, Baptist Children’s Hospitals, Doctors, Homestead and Mariners, Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute and Baptist Outpatient Services (Baptist Outpatient Services). Baptist Health Foundation, the fundraising arm in the organization, supports services at all hospitals and facilities affiliated with Baptist Health.

With the arrival of spring and summer especially, the occurrence of hot days causes many people want to remove this heat any food or drink.

For this reason, opt for soft drinks or foods such as fresh fruits can be a very good choice, egg choose either refreshing tea or fruit such as watermelon or cantaloupe.

The latter is characterized mainly because, in addition to a delicious fresh fruit, has a number of benefits and properties that can become an excellent alternative to mitigate the heat, especially if fresh.

Benefits and properties of melon
Undoubtedly, there are few foods that can match its low calorie content, as well as the main issue, it is a fruit that has a 90% water in composition.

For this reason, as we have been indicated throughout this article, has a refreshing ability so that makes it an ideal substitute for soft drinks.

Among the benefits it contains, we highlight the vitamin A, which we know helps people who suffer from dry mucous membranes and skin.
It also has vitamin E, a substance highly protective antioxidant that helps prevent cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

It acts as a laxative, diuretic (great for removing toxins from the body ) and helps neutralize the acidity.

Of course, we must not forget either of its high content of carotenoids, as long as we opt for the orange-fleshed melons.

The heart’s lower chambers are called “ventricles.” The lower left chamber is called “left ventricle” and is the main pumping chamber of the heart. The lower-right chamber called “right ventricle”. An overstrain of the ventricles can lead to heart failure.

There is talk of heart failure when the heart is weakened so that it can not adequately fill or pump blood efficiently. The slow onset and progression of heart failure is due to the efforts of the heart to compensate for progressive weakening. The heart tries to compensate for this weakness by increasing in size, in an attempt to contain more blood and keep pumping the same amount of blood.

In most patients, heart failure is due to a left ventricular failure. Evolve to heart failure, left ventricular effort increases while it can not pump enough blood to other organs. When drugs and pacemakers do not help heart patients need a heart transplant or a mechanical pump.

However, unfortunately, there is a shortage of donor hearts for transplantation. In the United States, as many as 50,000 people a year need a heart transplant, but only 2000 to 2500 receive one. That means that many patients die each year waiting for a heart transplant.

Due to the shortage of donor hearts, researchers have spent years developing mechanical pump called “ventricular assist devices” (DAV). By taking some of the work of the heart, DAV helping attend to the heart ventricles to pump blood, relieving the workload of the heart in patients with heart failure. If the device is used to help (or “unload” the left ventricle, is called “left ventricular assist device” (LVAD). If used to “unload” the right ventricle, is called “assistive device right ventricular “(ARVD).

What is a DAV?
Almost all VADs consist of three parts :
A pump that is implanted in the body (a DAV implantable ) or placed outside the body (external or a VAD paracorporeal )
A system controller that remains outside the body and is used to set the parameters of the DAV
An external power source to power the pump (can be a console or a battery).
How do you put in the body implantable pumps?

With implantable VADs, design and size of the pump will determine where in the body is implanted pump.

With DAV such as left ventricular assist system HeartMate II ® and the left ventricular assist system DuraHeart ™ , the pump is implanted below the heart, in the upper abdomen. To implement these VADs, surgeons connect a tube (called ‘inflow cannula “) of the pump to the left ventricular apex. Then another tube (called a “cannula exit”) connects the pump to the aorta, which is the main artery that supplies blood to the body.

DAV with another type of implantable ventricular assist system HeartWare ® , the pump is smaller, so that the inflow cannula is inserted into the apex of the heart and the pump is placed in the fluid-filled space that surrounds the heart (called “pericardial space ‘).

In the implementation of a RVAD, the inflow cannula connects the pump to the tip of the right ventricle and the outflow cannula connects the pump to the pulmonary artery, which is the main artery leading to the lungs.

Finally, both with and with ARVD LVAD, the pump is connected to another tube exiting the body through the abdominal wall and connected to the console or drum of the pump and control system.

How do you put in your body pumps paracorporeal?

The DAV Paracorporeal passes through a long, thin tube (called a “catheter”) is placed in the femoral vein or femoral artery.

One type of DAV paracorporeal, the system TandemHeart ® , is an external pump that takes blood from a catheter placed in the patient’s left atrium and sends it to the femoral artery.

Another type of paracorporeal VAD, the cardiac assist device Impella ® 2.5, has a very small pump located at the end of a catheter. Impella catheter enters the patient’s femoral artery. Then a camera is used to guide the catheter into the Impella left ventricle. The Impella sends blood the left ventricle to the ascending aorta, which is the main blood vessel leaving the left ventricle.

What is the difference between DAV Paracorporeal?

Paracorporeal VADs differ from implantable VADs that are introduced with a catheter through a blood vessel and do not require open heart surgery. This type of VAD is designed typically for short-term assistance. The following are some reasons why a patient may need a VAD paracorporeal:

His heart has been weakened after a recent heart intervention (which is called cardiogenic shock )
It can not be removed from the lung machine after heart surgery
He is waiting to receive implantable VAD for long-plazoVAD
In some patients, the DAV Paracorporeal can be used for longer periods, for example, while awaiting a heart transplant.

How does the DAV?

With an LVAD, blood passes from the right ventricle to the pump, and then into the aorta and reaches to the body. With ARVD, the right ventricular blood flows to the pump, and then into the pulmonary artery to the lungs where it picks up oxygen. The DAV paracorporeal pumps oxygen-rich blood from the left atrium or ascending aorta to the body. Depending on the type of VAD, it can be connected to an external console plugged into a wall outlet or a battery that can be carried on their shoulders.

Why would I need a patient a VAD?

The first decision to make the surgeon is whether the patient needs an RVAD and LVAD (so-called “biventricular assistance”), or only an LVAD. In most patients, only the left ventricular assistance is required. If the patient is very ill, are in shock or suffering from liver or kidney failure, you may need biventricular support.

The DAV is used for three main reasons:

To keep the patient alive until a donor heart found for transplantation. In that case, the VAD is used as a bridge to transplantation.

For the heart to “rest” and can recover some of its normal capacity. When there is a degree of cardiac recovery, which is also called remission of heart failure , the device can be removed and may not need a heart transplant. In that case, the VAD is used as a bridge to recovery . These patients typically can return to their home and normal life after implantation of the DAV.
To assist the circulation for some years. This is typically the option for certain patients too ill to undergo a heart transplant. In that case, the VAD is used as final assistance system . Patients with this type of long-term care can usually go home and normal life after implantation of the DAV.

The transplant surgeons have also found that long-term assistance with the DAV support the functioning of other organs of the body, which allows the patient to regain strength before heart transplantation.

The U.S. government commissioned a study on the reliability of medical devices such as defibrillators, pacemakers and insulin pumps. Their results confirmed that it is now possible to hack a human heart by altering the implant that allows him to continue working.

The report said that these devices are “vulnerable,” although Professor Kevin Fu, University of Massachusetts Amherst, noted that these are essential in many treatments. “The implants help patients to lead normal healthy lives without constant revisions,” he told the BBC.

The study revealed that the attacks would endanger the implants used to manage diseases like diabetes and heart disease, such as insulin pumps, defibrillators and pacemakers.

Karen Sandler, a lawyer, programmer and advocate of open source software, told the BBC his concern that is increasingly common that these implants provide information and can even do it wirelessly, which is the most serious for her.

Meanwhile, Barnaby Jack, expert in computer security firm McAfee, found that insulin may hackearse implants. In just two weeks-said-detected signal emitted by an insulin pump and found the way to hackearla alter their function.

The use of ultrasound therapy for pain relief has become increasingly popular in recent years. First used in the 1940′s, ultrasound therapy has proven extremely effective in treating pain and muscle spasms and inflammation. Many individuals with conditions such as bursitis, arthritis and fibromyalgia have found relief with the use of an ultrasound machine reputable therapy. Ultrasound treatment works by sound waves.

The sound waves of high frequency of stimulating tissue beneath the surface of the skin, relieve pain and spasms in the muscles. Today, it’s easier than ever to take advantage of the benefits to relieve pain by owning your own home ultrasound machine. With your own personal machine of ultrasound therapy, not only has the capacity to experience pain relief benefits at any time, but are also able to enjoy many of the other benefits of therapeutic ultrasound. Ultrasound waves penetrate working surface layers of the skin and cause soft tissue areas to vibrate, which relieves pain and inflammation. They also increase blood flow in the treated area, which can reduce inflammation and aid in healing.

Another key benefit of having a therapeutic ultrasound machine is the unique ability of the ultrasound waves to break up scar tissue, allowing it to treat injuries, including age. Using a therapeutic ultrasound machine is very easy. A special gel is applied to the skin to reduce friction and act as a conductor of ultrasonic waves, then the probe is placed against the area being treated. The sound waves are transmitted to passing through the skin, reaching the soft tissue below. The power pulse of sound waves stimulate your joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles to help in muscle relaxation, which offers a drug free method to relieve pain.

For many individuals, using a therapeutic ultrasound machine has proved much more effective in relieving pain than many invasive methods, such as cortisone injections or surgery. It has proved particularly effective in treating sports injuries and has become very popular among many athletes, allowing them to return to play sooner than if you let a wound heal by itself.

An ultrasound machine staff also offers relief from tendonitis by reducing inflammation in the tendons and allowing them to heal. Home Ultrasound machines are a safe and effective for treatment of injuries, reduce swelling and relieve Pain. By buying an ultrasound machine personal therapy, look for one that has a good reputation, preferably supported by testimony, and comes with a good warranty.

Sometimes the baby needs special medical care from the moment of birth. Can be monitored in a particular sector of motherhood, or even be hospitalized in a pediatric service. This difficult test always seems too long, but does not imply, as before, a departure total.

In almost all situations and to the extent possible, medical staff now seeks, in different ways, keeping links between the newborn and their parents when the baby can not stay with the mother for medical reasons.

This is the case, specifically, premature babies …

When you decide to put a newborn in the incubator?
Not all preterm babies (born before 37 weeks observed) go to the incubator. A baby born at the end of the eighth month of pregnancy, sometimes stays with the mother, if in good health. Of course, it will be kept under close surveillance, and even be able to breastfeed. Instead, you need to develop in the incubator at first if born before the end of the eighth month, if less than 2.5 kilos, if des-nourished, if you have trouble breathing or have had a difficult birth.

Breathing and feeding. A premature baby is a boy whose essential functions have not reached maturity. Within the incubator to a temperature remains constant. Usually, is connected to various apparatus. Some help you breathe, your tissues and brain are well oxygenated, others to feed (sometimes by infusion, if tolerated oral feeding) and other devices monitor their
status (heart rate, oxygen index and temperature). How long? The duration of hospitalization of a premature infant is extremely variable, ranging from several days to several weeks. All fulfilled depends on the month they were born, the evolution of their weight, the quality of your breathing, your tolerance to food, the possible occurrence of infections, etc.. Most of the time all goes well, the baby develops at first in the incubator and then in the crib until it reaches the autonomy and the weight that will allow you to live at home.

How to maintain the bond with the baby in the hospital?
You can always visit a newborn in the incubator or hospitalized.
These meetings will provide the opportunity to see him, to start building links, to make you feel your affection. While these exchanges will prove frustrating and you seem too limited, your father’s presence and will make a great good. If separation has occurred at the time of birth, that’s the only way the mother and baby are known. The more often you see your baby and be with him, the better. You will also have opportunity to speak with the medical team.

Need clear answers, sincere and concrete for all your questions.
Contact with the baby in the incubator. In this case, the medical staff as it leads to pro-daily visits, even several per day. You approach the baby to see you, talk and maybe you can play through the openings in the incubator. Sometimes, if not entirely dependent on the devices, you can catch a moment in his arms. In addition, medical teams will encourage you to be there when you groom, and as soon as possible, you can help. If you wish, you can take your baby milk (which you’ve taken with pump). Also, a handkerchief soaked with your scent your baby can help maintain a link with you. Before returning home, do not hesitate to ask for directions about the care needed, not to feel helpless.

Is it possible to stay with the child in neonatal units?
When the child is premature or sick there, however, another solution, apart from his admission to a traditional care. Are neonatal units. The mother is with the baby in the same room, is involved in grooming and aids in certain cures. Whenever you wish, you can go direct or “SSC” (English translation of “skin to skin”).

This technique, also called kangaroo care, is, broadly speaking, to keep in contact with skin from mother to newborn, upright and wearing only diapers.

Has a basically psychological and emotional interest, but this contact with the mother also transmits its heat. This method requires, of course, that the baby has enough autonomy to get out of the incubator. In the neonatal unit differs Care Unit or Basic Minimum addressed to infants with mild diseases or those who require a period of.

Observation, and intensive care unit for newborns with moderately serious pathologies or premature.
Currently, in Spain there is a hundred hospitals that are trained to care for newborns weighing less than 1.5 kilos.

To remain with the baby when you are sick? When a baby born at 9 months, or premature, neonatal surgical care needs, sometimes the mother, if you wish, you can stay day and night by his side. This solution, inspired by neonatal units, the offer some specialized hospitals.

What is the temperature that should be?
The neutral temperature is between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius. When is below 36, the organs do not function well and there are greater requirements in their metabolism.

Why would a newborn should go to the incubator?
A premature babies have a hard time regulating their temperature, which is why, if they are left outside the incubator can be cooled easily.

What if the baby is cool?
Upon cooling, have greater requirements for oxygen, glucose or, worse, it can compromise your vital signs. If you make a very severe hypothermia and your body becomes less than 34 degrees centigrade, life is compromised.

What if the baby gets very hot?
The incubator is to put it another way, the heating for the newborn. It has a thermometer that attaches permanently to the baby’s skin, called servo, which tells the incubator in which temperature is the baby. If you are under 36, the incubator temperature rises automatically to take the baby to 36 degrees, but if for some reason, the baby is too hot and above 37, the lower the temperature automatically incubator that is providing.

What is the difference between a closed incubator and open?
The closed with a glass cover that completely covers the baby and not exposed to ambient air. The heat comes from the bottom, where the baby is lying. Its main feature is that the baby is not subjected to cold drafts and will not lose liquid by evaporation because it is in an environment where the air is also hot.

The open, also called radiant heat because there is a wall that encloses the baby, but in the backs, at a reasonable distance, there is a tower that has a radiant heat source.

What is the temperature at which they belong?
Neutral temperature is between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius. When below 36, the organs do not function well and there are increased requirements in their metabolism.

Why would a newborn should go to the incubator?
Premature babies have a hard time regulating their temperature, so if you leave out of the incubator can cool very easily.

What if the baby is cooled?
Upon cooling, have higher oxygen requirement, glucose or, worse, it can compromise your vital signs. If you make a very severe hypothermia and his body goes below 34 degrees Celsius, life is compromised.

What if the baby gets very hot?
The incubator is, in other words, the heating for the newborn. Have a thermometer that attaches permanently to the baby’s skin, called servo control, and informs the incubator in which temperature is the baby. If you are below 36, the incubator temperature rises automatically to bring the baby to 36 degrees, but if for some reason, the baby gets too hot and is above 37, the incubator automatically lower the temperature that is providing.

What is the difference between a closed incubator and open?
The closed with a glass cover that completely covers the baby and not exposed to ambient air. The heat comes from the bottom, where the baby is lying. Its main feature is that the baby is not subjected to cold drafts and will not lose liquid by evaporation because you have a medium in which the air is also hot.

The open, also called radiant heat because there is a wall which encloses the baby, but in the upper area, at a reasonable distance, there is a tower having a radiant heat source.
However, both have the same function and are servo-controlled.

In the nursery there are some babies in incubators incubators closed and others open, how to decide what should go every baby?

The first days of life it is preferable to the incubator open, if necessary make some procedure. After one or two days, passing the baby to a closed incubator.
