The most common forms of bariatric surgery in the UK are gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding surgery. Both forms of weight loss surgery are reserved for people who have a body mass index of over 40 or over 35 BMI with type II diabetes or another life threatening condition present.
Gastric bypass surgery is a form of bariatric surgery where the stomach is surgically reduced in size so it is impossible to eat as much food as before. Gastric banding surgery is slightly different; a band is placed around the top portion of the stomach. The band creates a “ mini stomach” , actually a pouch, that holds much less food than the whole stomach. Again, a person feels full very quickly and cannot eat as much food.
Gastric banding surgery is less invasive and the healing times are greatly reduced. Only a doctor who specializes in bariatric surgery can determine which surgery will produce the most benefits for a person with the least risk. Both types of surgery require a person to make major lifestyle changes. Neither is a panacea, old eating habits must be changed. If a person follows their post-operation diet, they should expect major weight loss for about two years after surgery. After that, they will be fit enough and motivated enough to embark on a healthy lifestyle and get down to their ideal weight.
